Superior achievement in Spotlight

Posted

In another tip of the cap to the Gatesville High School varsity volleyball team's best showing in a decade, members of the team were honored on Dec. 12 during the Student Spotlight presentation at the Gatesville Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting.

"Before the start of the 2022-2023 school year, we challenged our team sports not simply to make the playoffs but to win a playoff game," said GISD Superintendent Barrett Pollard. "The volleyball team, like in most sports, had ups and downs in the season while facing some stiff competition.

"However, Coach Janey Weber's team peaked at the right time at the end of the season and went on an incredible winning streak. They defeated the top ranked team in our district (Salado). They defeated Robinson in a tiebreaker game to get third place in district. Then they defeated Georgetown Gateway in the bi-district game and Caldwell in the area game.”

Those on the team included: sophomore Vania Martinez, junior Barrett Boyd, junior Laura Trejo, sophomore Ally Penrod, senior Rachel Garrett, senior Charlee Barron, freshman Emma Pollard, sophomore Tamiah Miller, senior Kaleigh Haywood, senior Lola Barron, senior Khloe Matthews and freshman Taylor Sanderson.

"It was a very exciting season — they did a great job and won a lot of awards. Coach Weber is in her third year and next year we want you to go all the way to state," Barrett Pollard said.

Several of the Hornets received District 23-4A honors, including Newcomer of the Year Emma Pollard, first-team selections Lola Barron and Haywood; second-team selection Charlee Barron; and honorable mention choices Barrett Boyd, Khloe Mathews and Tamiah Miller.

Those earning academic all-district honors were Lola Barron, Boyd, Garrett, Haywood, Martinez, Mathews and Pollard.
