I just received a call from one of my “partners in ‘crime’ (‘mischief’ is probably the better word)” who asked me if I am delusional, delirious or intoxicated since I reported absolute fake news last week.

Huh? (We know I don’t drink anything but sweet tea and Dr. Pepper, but the other two possibilities, well … ). It seems that my faux pas was in describing the new Pearl mascot, “little” Oliver, the very friendly and loving dog that has become the watchdog of Pearl. Therefore, I am submitting this retraction and my apologies to all concerned, especially Oliver, since he seems to be completely unaware of his gargantuan size. I had forgotten that Oliver is the size of a small horse and thinks he can fit in the passenger side of Linda Ray’s small SUV. He’s so smart that he could probably drive that car, if he could actually fit in the darn thing! I did get one thing correct, though. Oliver is very sweet and absolutely adorable! When he comes to services at Pearl Church of Christ on Sundays, Oliver immediately looks for his kiddos. Those precious kids love to lay on the ground to let Oliver walk across them – forward and back again. They giggle hysterically, and Oliver looks like he has done something heroic. You just can’t fault a dog who loves children as much as he does. Oliver was introduced to Linda’s niece recently, an adorable, but oh-so-tiny puppy named Lulu. Oliver and Lulu bonded instantly as that oversized lunk treated Lulu with extreme care and concern. So, if you happen to be in Pearl and run into a dog the size of a Buick who wants to welcome you to Pearl with all his heart, just go with the flow and show Oliver some love. He will be your friend for life.

I got to talk to Kay this past week. She reports that she is keeping Gatesville in order just like she did with Pearl. Lucky Gatesville. She and her faithful companion, another puppy roughly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, can be found along with their other sidekick, Michelle, patrolling Raby Park. We wish the crew hundreds of top-ten weather days. Be sure to say hello to this merry group when you’re out enjoying this historical, shady Gatesville treasure.

The next Pearl Bluegrass and Pearl Cottage Bookstore Day will be March 4. The book cottage will open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Be sure and visit Linda, Kay and Corlis. You never know what treasures you might find in the cottage. Plus, just browsing the over 6,000 books in the store is fascinating. Most items are “buy what you want, pay what you want,” and all proceeds go toward local charities. Visit the friendliest little bookstore in Texas – you’ll be so glad you did. There’s no place like Pearl!
