Gatesville girls head into tough tournament season with winning record

Posted

Kim Chaffin’s Gatesville girls basketball squad picked up their fourth win of the season with a decisive 43-32 win over Whitney on Nov. 28 and will now head to Glen Rose to battle in one of the state’s toughest tournaments.

The win over Whitney pushed Gatesville’s record to 4-2 through six games and featured contributions from seven different Lady Hornets on the offensive end. The interior duo of Taylor Coward and Emma Pollard had 12 points apiece.

Guard Taylor Sanderson buried a pair of three-pointers to giver her six points in the win, and Yasminn Sanders and Paige Sentillas each chipped in four. Alanda Wimberley had three points while Laura Trejo had two points.

After opening the season with a win over McGregor, the Hornets have beaten Belton, Live Oak, and Whitney while dropping games at San Saba and at home against Rogers.

Coward and Pollard have emerged as the centerpiece of the Lady Hornets attack, combining to average almost 25 points and 16 rebounds per game. Sanders and Sentillas are each averaging more than two assists per game, and the Lady Hornets are taking better care of the basketball as a unit – a top priority for Chaffin. Gatesville has committed less than 20 turnovers in three of their games thus far.

In the Glen Rose tournament, they will begin in pool play against 3A No. 23 Bushland and the Glen Rose JV. They will play Bushland on Thursday, then Glen Rose on Friday.

Should the Hornets finish pool play on top, they will likely face the Glen Rose varsity in the first game of bracket play. The Lady Tigers were state semi-finalists a year ago and are the No. 2 team in the state in Class 4A this season.

Gatesville will travel to Jarrell and to Troy for two more rounds of tournament play before opening district on Jan. 5 at Robinson.
