Throwing motion

Wesley Brown uncorks a pass during Saturday’s 7-on-7 football tournament at Gatesville. Four teams played at Gatesville while other parts of the bracket were moved to Lorena, China Spring and McGregor. Brown is one of the quarterbacks in the mix for the starting job for the Hornets varsity.

Hornets drop contests in tournament

Gatesville is young and learning on the football fi eld this spring. The team hosted a 16-team 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament for Division II teams Saturday and took some lumps.

Rundown and tag

Adalynn Wolf makes a tag of Kymber Jenkins at home plate in the G&M Concrete game with Jonesboro in T-ball action Friday. The Gatesville Recreation department runs the league at the Gatesville Athletic Complex. The season is in full swing, despite several rainouts of late. The league includes players from 6U to 15U.

The Gatesville Parks and Recreation league is busy with plenty of scheduled games along with makeups from the recent rainouts.

Leader in the clubhouse

Evan Washburn led the Hornets with a round of 76 Monday at the Class 4A state golf championships at the Plum Tree Golf Course in Kyle. The two-day tournament concluded Tuesday. Complete results will be in Saturday’s paper.

Team stands strong

Evan Washburn played his final 10 holes in two-over par to rally for a round of 76 to keep the Gatesville sophomore in contention for the state medalist race Monday at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle.

Sharing the MVP

Senior outfielder Maci Matthews and senior catcher Kennedy Berry shared the Most Valuable Player for the Hornets softball team at the team’s banquet last week.
