GHS competes in Clifton softball tourney

Posted

The Gatesville Hornet softball team competed at the Clifton tournament March 3-6, finishing the outing with a 3-1-2 record.

The team faced Red Oak, Albany, Waco La Vega twice, Maypearl and Clifton. This tournament gave the Lady Hornets, who are 5-8-2 on the season, a vision of what may come in a few weeks.

“The tournament was a good mix of teams that were pretty comparable to what we would see in district,” GHS softball coach Andrea Holdbrook said. “I think our first few weeks were really tough but mentally prepared us to play with more focus in this tournament.”

The Lady Hornets fell to Red Oak, 8-2, then beat the Albany Lady Lions 6-3. Then they edged the La Vega Lady Pirates, 8-7, before tying them, 5-5. The Lady Hornets then tied the Maypearl Lady Panthers, 2-2 before dominating the Clifton Lady Cubs 14-1.

“In the games, we jumped out ahead on offense; we were more successful on defense,” Holdbrook said. “The girls are clicking, and pitching is working well. By the end of the tournament, our bats were hot, and the majority of the lineup was crushing the ball.”

The Gatesville Lady Hornets on Tuesday (March 1), defeated the Jarrell Lady Cougars 4-1 at Jarrell High School.

The Lady Hornets played the China Spring Lady Cougars on Tuesday (March 8). Those results will be in a future edition.
