GHS boys, girls win Whitney track meet

The Gatesville High School varsity boys and girls track teams won the team titles in the Billy McCreight Relays on Thursday, March 3 at Whitney High School.

GHS competed against West, Maypearl, Whitney, and Keene. The boys finished with 183 points as a team, while the girls finished with 181 points.

In the boys 100-meter run, L.J. Hall placed fifth with 11.94 seconds. In the girls, 100-meter, Lauren Stuard placed first, finishing in 13.32 seconds.

In the boys 200 meters, Trevor Smith placed fifth, finishing at 25.06 seconds, while in the girls 200 Avery Mullins also placed fifth, with Lindsey Cummings taking sixth place with a time of 30.51.

In the boys 400 meters, Jeffrey Tesar placed second, finishing at 55.07 seconds.

The 800-meter run had Luis Macias winning first place and Tesar placing second behind him. Macias finished in a time of 2:06.12, while Tesar finished in 2:14.68.

Gatesville took first and third in the girls 800, with Bethany Penrod winning in a time of 2:40.45, while Kyla Hinojosa timed in at 2:51.32 for third.

The boys 1,600-meter race had Gatesville in the top two spots again, with Carlo Martinez finishing first in 4:46.12, while Macias followed as runner-up in 4:57.97. Vania Martinez in the girls 1,600-meter run placed first with a time of 5:44.14, followed by Penrod in second at 5:51.81. Hinojosa finished fourth in a time of 6:36.88.

In the boys 3,200 meters, Carlo placed first with a time of 9:58.93. In the girls 3,200, Vania also placed first, with a time of 12:31.94.

HURDLES

In boys' 110-meter 39-inch hurdles, Bradyn Culley placed second in 17.34 seconds, while Kasen Bankhead placed third at 19.09 seconds. In the girls 100-meter hurdles, Valeria Jimenez finished first in 17.25 seconds, while Barrett Boyd placed fifth in 20.11 seconds.

In the boys 300-meter hurdles, Sean Aguilar placed second, crossing the finish line at the 45.87-second mark, followed by Jacob Baker in third, finishing in 46.08 seconds. On the girls side, Jimenez placed first finishing in 54.21-seconds, while Ellie Kelley finished fourth at 1:00.35.

RELAYS

In the boys 4 by 100 relay, Hall, Tommy Aaron, Theron Stone, and Cory Burns placed fourth in 46.26 seconds. The GHS girls team of Kennedy Preciado, Addi Wolff, Mullins, and Stuard placed fifth in 54.85 seconds.

In the 4x400 relay, Baker, Aguilar, Smith, and Burns finished in third place, finishing with a time of 3:50.16. The girls’ team of Penrod, Hinojosa, Boyd and Vania placed third in 4:43.72.

SHOT PUT

Brayden Minton took first place for GHS, throwing the 12-pound ball a distance of 41-06.00, while Trent Ray finished fifth, with an even 35 feet. Jacy Archie placed first for the girls, throwing the four-kilogram ball a distance of 31-06.50, while Kaylie Tippit placed fourth, at 28-06.00.

DISCUS

Minton threw the disc 124-07, to win the event, while Ray placed behind him in second with a distance of 118-09. Tippit for the girls placed fourth, throwing the 1-kilogram disc at a distance of 76-07.

HIGH JUMP

In boys, high jump, Jack Carroll and Tyler Shea tied for third at a height of 5-06.00. Boyd and Mullins placed first and second in the girl’s high jump. Boyd jumped a height of 5-00.00, while Mullins jumped at a height of 4-10.00.

POLE VAULT

David Manear placed tied for first place, pole vaulting a total of 9-06-00, while Boyd tied for first in the girl’s competition, pole vaulting a total of 11-00.00.

LONG JUMP

Kyle Shafer jumped 18-09.00, placing third, while Culley placed fifth at a distance of 18-05.75. Wolff placed fifth in the girls long jump. Wolff jumped a distance of 13-08.25.

TRIPLE JUMP

In boys triple jump, Shafer jumped a distance of 39-09.00, placing second. Culley was third, jumping a distance of 38-10.00, while Bankhead placed fourth with a distance of 38-08.50. For the girls, Stuard placed second, with a distance of 31-10.00, while Mullins came in fourth at 30-04.00, and Wolff placed fifth, with 29-08.50.
