Sue Edwards McLelland passed away Feb. 8, 2024, at the age of 73. Annetta Sue (“Sue”) McLelland was born June 8, 1950, and passed away peacefully at home in Burnet on Feb. 8, 2024. Sue was born to L.Z. and Eva Edwards in Waco. Sue obtained her high school diploma from Tomball High School in 1968, after which she attended Baylor University in Waco (pre-requisite work) and Dallas (nursing school), where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Sue subsequently obtained her Master of Science degree in nursing from Texas Women’s University in Denton and attended the University of Chicago to complete the necessary coursework and credentials to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Sue met her husband of 50 years, Gerald McLelland, while she was in nursing school, and he was working as a structural engineer in Dallas. Sue’s smile and kind heart won him over. The couple married on Nov. 24, 1973, and had three sons: Matthew (“Matt”) Edward McLelland, Michael Edward McLelland, and Marcus (“Mark”) Edward McLelland.

Sue was energetic, positive, and kind. Her clinical nursing practice was primarily in the intensive care unit. Sue was intelligent, decisive, and caring as she treated some of the most complex hospital patients. She later taught nursing at El Centro College in Dallas (now Dallas College) and helped start an extension of El Centro’s nursing program at Brookhaven Community College in Dallas. Sue had a passion for training a new generation of nurses, a profession she dearly loved. Several nurses who cared for her during her illness commented that they learned from her and are better nurses as a result.

Sue and Gerald have recently been designing and building their retirement home in Wolf Creek Ranch overlooking Lake Buchanan outside of Burnet. Every nook and cranny of the new home has Sue’s fingerprints on it along with Gerald’s expert design. While its completion was delayed by COVID as well as continued issues with availability of materials and labor, Sue could see that the finish line was near, and for her, the process itself brought her such joy.

Sue and Gerald were members first of Northway Baptist Church and then Park Cities Baptist Church while living in Dallas. They joined First Baptist Church - Burnet after relocating to the hill country.

Sue was preceded in death by her son, Matt McLelland, of Austin; father, L.Z. Edwards, of Gatesville; brother, Jim Edwards, of Gilmer; and brother-in-law, Stanley McLelland, of Austin. She is survived by her husband, Gerald McLelland and her sons, Michael and Mark; daughter-in-law, Chanita Chantaplin McLelland, of Austin; grandchildren, William (“Will”) Chantaplin McLelland and Samantha (“Sam”) Chantaplin McLelland, of Austin; her mother, Eva Edwards, of Gatesville; brother, Greg Edwards and wife, Kelly, of Liberty; sister, Janda Edwards, of Dallas; sisters-in-law, Martha McLelland Stenseng and husband, Vern, of Kerrville, and Sherry Edwards, of LaPorte; and nieces and nephews, Adam Smith and wife, Magda, of Wimberley; Jordan Edwards and James Edwards, of LaPorte; Allison Edwards, of Houston; Emily Edwards, of Liberty; and Erin Edwards, of Dallas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donating to Living LFS (livinglfs.org), the Sarcoma Alliance (sarcomaalliance.org), MD Anderson Cancer Center (mdanderson.org), or another worthy cause.
