Roger Huckabee March 11, 1942 - Feb. 16, 2024

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Roger Paul Huckabee, age 81, of Gatesville, a distinguished veteran and dedicated public servant, who passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024.     

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, at Scott’s Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Dossey officiating.  Burial followed immediately after the service at Restland Cemetery. 

Roger was born on March 11, 1942 and graduated from Gatesville High School. He then entered the military, serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.  After his service, Roger studied Criminal Justice at Central Texas College before embarking on a distinguished career with the Austin Police Department.  He was awarded Officer of the Year in 1967 for his heroism during the mass shooting event at the University of Texas the previous year.  Over 25 years of service in the department he moved from patrolman to sergeant, then homicide detective and narcotics agent.  In 1992, Roger retired from the Austin Police Department as Senior Sergeant, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and integrity. Following his retirement, Roger continued his commitment to serving his community when elected Constable for Coryell County, where he faithfully served from 1994 until 2009.

He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend.  A larger-than-life figure, his intelligence, wit, and sense of humor left an impression wherever he went.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice & Audie Huckabee; his brother, Mike Huckabee; and daughters, Charlotte and Lisa Lee.

Roger is survived by his wife, Barbara Huckabee; son, Wade Huckabee and wife Krista and their children, Griffin and Finley Huckabee, as well as grandchildren, Megan Richardson and husband Rhett, Cody Mohler and wife Robin, and great grandchildren, Tyler, Tripp, and Tinsley Richardson, Haz and Mya Mohler.  Roger is also survived by Barbara’s sisters & their families, Linda & James Draper and Brenda and David Byrom.
