Red Cross Month observed annually in March

Posted

Red Cross Month is observed annually during the month of March.

Coryell County is in the Central and South Texas region of the Red Cross organization, which serves 83 counties and over 9.4 million people.

Headquartered in Austin, other locations are in Bryan, Del Rio, El Paso, Kerrville, Laredo, Midland, San Antonio, and Waco, with volunteers in every county in between.

The services of the Red Cross include disaster relief and preparedness, lifesaving CPR and first aid training, international family tracing, and support for military veterans and their families.

According to redcross.org, “Volunteers within different communities have carried out 90 percent of the humanitarian work for the Red Cross.”

When you join the American Red Cross, you are joining a worldwide movement dedicated to providing relief to people impacted by disasters. Whether you work full-time, are in career transition, a student looking for experience, active-duty military, a veteran, retired, or only have a few extra hours a month, you too can make a difference and save lives.

Listed are volunteer opportunities available in the Central and South Texas Region:

Shelter Staff: Help set up shelters for people displaced by disasters. Assist with greeting those coming into the shelter, registration, feeding, and other daily activities. Leadership and supervisory opportunities are available for those interested.

Health Services Staff: Licensed healthcare professionals are needed to help carry out a wide range of daily activities in disaster shelters. From replacing medications and durable medical equipment lost during disasters to screening for COVID-19 symptoms and assessing first-aid needs of people arriving at shelters, healthcare professionals play a vital role in maintaining healthy disaster shelters.

Disaster Mental Health: Coping with disaster can be difficult, and many people impacted by disasters need help overcoming feelings of stress and anxiety. Disaster Mental Health volunteers help provide mental health intervention where needed and help facilitate long term recovery.

Disaster Workforce Engagement: Help ensure volunteers are engaged in the Red Cross mission and have access and opportunities for training in their positions, so they are ready to help when disasters strike.

Staff Services: Ensure disaster operations are properly staffed by assigning volunteers to appropriate shifts and positions while providing excellent customer services to volunteers and staff on disaster operations.

Recovery Planning Casework: Support long-term recovery of individuals, families, and communities affected by disasters by assisting with recovery planning problem-solving and advocacy.
