Pearl News

Posted

Howdy from deep East Texas! Well, it’s off to another rodeo for me this weekend. Who knew that at my age I’d be riding bulls and wild broncs, and bulldogging steers again! This rootin’, tootin’ cowgirl is living the dream. OK, fake news — or maybe I really am dreaming.

However, my oldest granddaughter, Callyn, really IS a cowgirl in the money after last week’s rodeo in Groesbeck. She won the two age groups she competed in — breakaway (with 5.63 seconds, thank you very much) and goat tying. Takes after her grandmother, huh. Not this one that does the Pearl News but the other one for sure who really IS a cowgirl. Anyway, I’m enjoying every second of our traveling and of watching this sweet, talented 9-year-old girl compete and have fun. Life is good.

Pearl has had a flurry of activity the last couple of weeks. The annual Pearl Flea Market was a rousing success. Everyone reported that they enjoyed the two-day event and were pleased with the money they made selling their wares. We also heard how great the homemade food in the kitchen was and how fun it was to go to the Pearl Cottage Bookstore to visit and shop. Don’t forget that the next Pearl Book Cottage Day is Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in conjunction with the Pearl Bluegrass event. More info about that day, especially Junk in Your Trunk, next time.

The Pearl Church of Christ celebrated its 127th year on Sunday, Oct. 16, with 77 in attendance. Plaques were given to the youngest attending, Colby Newton; the oldest attending, Jim Wilkinson, age 87; the longest-married, Gil and Lynn Campbell at 55-plus years; the farthest traveled, Zane Dickey; and the longest-attending member, Margie Cummings at 70-plus years. The catered barbecue was enjoyed by all. Don’t tell anyone, but Margie hid an extra bowl of her Blueberry Delight for Ron McDonald to take home. He loves that dessert way too much. (Don’t we all?) Especially don’t tell Marilyn.

Coming up on Nov. 13 is the Pearl Thanksgiving Meal. This will be at the Pearl Community Center, starting at noon. Preceding the meal will be a community-wide church service at the center at 10 a.m. with Tony Cleaver speaking. For the meal, the turkey, ham, and dressing will be provided. You are welcome to bring a dessert or side dish if you wish. Everyone is invited to attend.

The next Pearl Community Center Board meeting is set for Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the center. All are invited to attend.

Don’t think I have forgotten about the teeny, tiny, turquoise greeny, stringy bikini. It’s just that it’s still doing the same thing — quivering, quaking and hissing. I think it’s planning something BIG. Kay had better watch her p’s and q’s because we know the atrocious attire can travel. And you know that Halloween is when it is the most active. David Scott said he’s not setting foot in Pearl until at least the middle of November. You know how much that crazy contraption loves to taunt him. Things are heating up in Pearl. Beware!

This week’s Bible verse: "Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.” — Romans 13:10 NIV

If my heart is right with God, every human being is my neighbor.

— Oswald Chambers
