We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Duayne Smith, who passed away on Sept. 14 in Temple.

Mr. Smith was born to Albert Oscar and Anna Murrah Smith in Pearl on June 7, 1935, graduating from Pearl High School in 1953.He then joined the Air Force, serving a term in Viet Nam, and later retiring in 1973. Mr. Smith married Patricia Shaw on Dec. 17, 1958. After residing in San Antonio for many years, they later moved to Gatesville in 2014. Services for Mr. Smith were held on Sept. 25 at Scott’s Funeral Home in Gatesville with interment with full military honors in Pearl Cemetery. Please keep this family in your prayers.

The Pearl Church of Christ will have their 128th Homecoming and Reunion on Oct. 15. Remember, church begins at 10:30 a.m., and dinner on the grounds will follow. Plaques will be given to the youngest attending, oldest attending, longest attending member, couple married the longest, and for the person who traveled the longest distance. Drive your vintage cars if you have one and join the fellowship, fun, and good preaching in Pearl! Everyone is invited!

The next Pearl Cemetery workday is set for Saturday, Oct. 14, 9 a.m., weather permitting. If the weather does not cooperate, it will be rescheduled for October 21.

The next Pearl Cottage Bookstore Day and Bluegrass event will be Oct. 7. Be there or be square! You don’t want to miss the awesome music, wonderful shopping, and the most fun of all—visiting with friends old and new.

Linda Ray reports that her favorite buzzard pair, Lenny and Squiggy, must have moved further south as it’s even too hot for them here in Central Texas. Linda asks for more prayers for a cold front and rain so that Lenny and Squiggy return very soon—some days siting them perched on poles rather than hovering over her is the only way she knows she’s still kicking, (Linda works way too hard—just sayin’!)

This week’s Bible verse comes from Romans 5:1-4—Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the Glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope. NIV

Please pray for rain and cooler weather, our country, and our schools.
