Mother Neff State Park to host annual Moth Night

Posted

Mother Neff State Park presents its annual Moth Night on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event is completely free with no park entrance fee, and the gate will open at 6:45 p.m.

During the event, you can actively participate by finding moths and taking notes. The easiest way is to download the iNaturalist app by visiting www.iNaturalist.org on your smart phone and create a profile before coming to the event. At the event, you take pictures of moths and upload them to the National Moth Week project on iNaturalist.

National Moth Week is held worldwide celebrating moths. Everyone everywhere can become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths.

National Moth Week was established in 2012 by members of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, a non-profit organization in Central New Jersey dedicated to local environmental education and conversation.

The idea grew from the popular local moth nights that attracted experienced and novice moth researchers of all ages.

According to nationalmothweek.org, “What began as a plan for a statewide moth night evolved into a national week and quickly became an international citizen science project that invited organizations and individuals to register their events for free.”
