County 4-H teams continue to win

Posted

Coryell County 4-H members have been busy competing and exceling at 4-H contests. Contests provide members not only with the opportunity to compete with other 4-H members, but also a great learning experience that helps them grow in their project areas and learn teamwork skills. The Livestock Judging, Consumer Decision Making, and Fashion Show contests were all recently held.

The District 8 Livestock Judging contest took place in Bryan on April 23 where 12 members in the junior, intermediate and senior divisions participated, representing Coryell County. The senior team once again qualified for the state contest by placing second in a tough field of competitors. District 8, which is made up of 21 counties in central Texas, is comprised of some of the best teams in the state. Placing in the top three and advancing to state is no easy feat. Placing just three points behind Bell County, the locals will again be vying for a chance to compete at a national contest once more. The intermediate and junior teams also placed well at Saturday’s contest, both finishing in the top 10.

The District Consumer Decision Making contest was held April 25 in Cleburne. Team members use their consumer skills after given a scenario, to place products. Intermediates and seniors justify their decisions by giving oral reasons. The Coryell County senior team placed 12th. Three teams of intermediates competed, placing third, fourth and 10th. Two junior teams represented the county, placing first and 10th.

The 4-H Fashion Show allows members to learn consumer buying skills, fashion design skills and sewing construction skills in a fun, competitive environment. Individuals also participate in a runway style show to display their garments. Cayleigh Coursey placed first in the senior division with her fashion story board and will advance to the state contest. Lillie Mann placed second in the Intermediate Buying-Dressy category.

All Coryell County 4-H members did an outstanding job representing the county at the District contests. The next District 4-H contests will be Public Speaking, Educational Presentations, and the Share the Fun Talent Show.
