Betty Mayhew, age 78, of the South Mountain community, passed away on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, in Temple. Betty’s family appreciates the kindness of the Baylor Scott & White staff, however, they are absolutely certain that she was p***ed (upset) to die in the hospital and not at home.
Private family graveside services will be held at Jonesboro Cemetery.
Betty Jean Mayhew was born on June 9, 1945 in Flat to the late Euna C. and Genia B. Seward Wilkins. She went to school in Flat and graduated from Gatesville High School. She married Billy Mayhew on August 15, 1963. She attended Central Texas College and studied accounting. She worked alongside her husband at Mayhew Machine Shop and was the silent force behind all of his business ventures. Her personality matched her red hair. She was spunky and a little mean, most likely because her children made her that way. She would go toe-to-toe with anyone that she thought wronged her family. She loved to laugh and play jokes and was the master of April fool jokes. She enjoyed scaring her grandson with Halloween masks and visiting with her granddaughter about boys. Betty loved fishing at the lake or on the Cowhouse Creek. Most of all, she loved her family, coffee, Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, and Marlboro reds, short, in the box, but not necessarily in that order. She was a fan of Elvis and Tom Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy Mayhew in 2014; sisters, Pat Baker, Mary Wilkins, JoAnn Mitchell; and a brother, William Wilkins.
Betty is survived by her son, David Mayhew and wife, Marci; daughter, Suzanne Mayhew; grandchildren, Jake Mayhew and wife, Morgan, Marleigh Mayhew; and her great granddaughter, that she was especially proud of, Storie Mayhew. She is also survived by her brothers, Robert Wilkins, Steve Wilkins; and sisters, Lillie Bright and Jenny Lindley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Betty’s memory with a bowl of Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, a cup of coffee, and maybe even a Marlboro red.
