Bernie Leo Symm, age 93, of The Grove passed from this life during the morning hours of Sunday, July 17, 2022, at Hillside Medical Lodge. He was born on Jan. 8, 1929, at The Grove to parents Johnnie and Frieda (Draeger) Symm.

Bernie has been a resident of The Grove for his whole life. He graduated from Belton High School and joined the U.S. Army soon after, serving in the Korean War. Bernie worked as a farmer, rancher and mechanic at The Grove for many years. He also worked for Fletcher Enterprise, American Desk, and Clawson Fertilizer in Moody. On Jan. 8, 1953, at The Grove, Bernie married the love of his life, Doris Boriack. The couple went on to build a family and home together including one daughter and two sons. Bernie loved his farm and working with his cows. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church his entire life, where he held several offices including elder and treasurer for many years. He loved spending time with his family and grandkids. Bernie loved going to church, and in his free time, he loved to go fishing. Bernie will be deeply missed by many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elmo, Ervin, and Alton; sisters-in-law, Imogene, Irene and Betty; as well as son-in-law, Mike Hebert.

Bernie leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 69 years, Doris Symm; daughter, Pamela Hebert, sons, Ron Symm and wife, Leslie, Michael Symm and wife, Susan; seven grandchildren, Jason Morris and wife, Sladjana, Jeffery Morris, Justin Symm and wife, Maddie, Megan Symm, Jordan Symm, Abby Frank and husband, Alex, Tannon Symm and wife, Abby; and four great-grandchildren; Maksim, Micah, Isaac, and Owen.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church at The Grove on August 17, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. John Heckman officiating.

In lieu of flowers please make any contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church in The Grove or Amedisys Hospice in Temple.
