Whatever happened to…..

20 YEARS AGO

(2002)

-- Air Force Airman Jerry A. Carter, a 2001 graduate of Gatesville High School, had graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

-- Amy Schloeman, a 2001 graduate of Gatesville High School, was a sophomore marine biology major at Texas A&M University and was doing maintenance duty aboard the Texas Clipper II during its cruise through the North Sea.

-- A retirement reception was held at the Windham School District honoring Jim Scott, Sharon Meharg and Bernice Walters. Together, the three had a combined 93 years of experience in the field of education.

-- Army Specialist Christopher R. Mata had graduated from basic combat military training at Fort Still, Oklahoma. A 1995 graduate of Gatesville High School, Mata received his bachelor’s degree in 2001 from Tarleton State University.

-- Elizabeth Marie Dominguez, a graduate of Gatesville High School, was listed on the Honorable Mention List for the spring 2002 semester at St. Edward’s University in Austin where she was majoring in language arts.

-- The Coryell Museum and Historical Center had run out of space for engraved bricks in the sidewalk in front of the building. However, orders were being taken for the sidewalk along 8th Street. The bricks were selling for $50 each.

30 YEARS AGO

(1992)

-- Delton Lilljedahl, Rodney Lusk, and Wayne Wallace were candidates for deacons to be ordained by pastor Tim Hunter at a special service held at Jonesboro Baptist Church.

-- Baylor University awarded degrees to two Gatesville students. Jonathon Nesbitt Hunt received a Bachelor of Administration degree and George Edward Schaub received a Master of Science degree.

-- Jack Elam and Melvin Horton of Bee House Masonic Lodge in Evant each received a 50-year pin from the Grand Lodge of Texas. The pins were presented by Art Heath, a past master of the Saratoga Lodge.

-- Leon Waddill, a World War I veteran was honored and presented a Life Membership to the Charles D. Jageler Post 42, The American Legion. Leon was 98 years old and had served as a Sergeant with the 92nd Division in France.

-- Work had finally been completed on the new Gatesville Independent School District administration building located on Lovers Lane. The old office was located in the Gatesville Elementary School.

-- Duplicate bridge winners were announced as being first place, Drs. Jerry Bagwell and Martin Baurer; second place (tie) Bennie Hansson and Eloise Hughes, Bob Lee and Raby Smalley; and fourth place, Ione Moore and Verna Smalley.

40 YEARS AGO

(1982)

-- Two men were in custody following the burglary of the Jim Miller Army Store in which property valued at up to $40,000 was taken.

-- The Arnett Community Club announced a $600 contribution to the Arnett Cemetery Association as a memorial tribute to the late Mr. and Mrs. Harmon White, longtime community leaders at Arnett.

-- R.L. and Corene Homan of Gatesville were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. R. L. Homan and the former Corene Lowery were married on August 24, 1932, in Flat.

-- Mrs. Callie Carroll of Gatesville was honored on her 80th birthday with a celebration in the home of her niece, Frances Adcock in Fort Worth.

-- Dr. Steve Norris, president of the American Heart Association chapter in Gatesville, presented Kathleen Williams with a plaque designating her as recipient of the Volunteer Recognition Award in Research.

-- Georgia Craig, an independent sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, was awarded a new Buick Regal automobile in recognition of her sales achievements with the Dallas-based firm.

50 YEARS AGO

(1972)

-- Gatesville’s public school system, in the middle of its first full week of 1972-73 operations, registered a gain of 81 pupils. A total of 1,958 students were enrolled, compared to 1,877 the previous year.

-- Savoy Lawrence, a veteran Oglesby cotton farmer, brought in the county’s first bale of the year as Coryell County’s 1972 cotton harvest got underway.

-- Sen. John Tower announced the appointment of William J. (Bill) Hix of Gatesville as Coryell County chairman for the senator’s re-election campaign to the U.S. Senate.

-- Jerry W. Ashby of Flat was among 659 graduates who received degrees during a commencement ceremony held at Southwest Texas State University.

-- Delia Freixa joined the city of Gatesville office staff as a clerk-typist and secretary to City Manager Jim Walker. She succeeded Sherry Murray, who had moved to Austin.

-- Kathie Schraeder, who received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tarleton State College, was honored with a supper held in the home of her mother, Eloise Schraeder.
