Oglesby falls to top-ranked Live Oak

One week after rolling up 92 points against Waco Eagle Christian, the Tigers met their match in the Waco Live Oak Classical Lions.

Live Oak, undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the TAPPs private school ranks, handed Oglesby its first loss in a 54-8 mercy-rule football game at Oglesby Thursday.

Carter Cheek raced 40 yards down the Oglesby sideline for the game-stopping touchdown early in the third quarter.

Oglesby (5-1) will host another quality opponent in Austin St. Stephens next week in their final tuneup for District 14-1A, Div. II.

“it’s good to play some tougher opponents,’’ Oglesby coach Jeb Dixon said. “They are good, but we just made too many mistakes with penalties. I thought we could get a break or two (turnovers) and have a chance.’’

The talented Live Oak squad was stacked with size and speed.

Dixon said he was pleased with the way the Tigers were able to pick up connections in the passing game.

The team was five of 10 passing 134 yards. Blake Thompson finished with four completions in five attempts for 78 yards.

Brodie Fisher hit one pass for 56 yards to Thompson.

Thompson tried to work his magic in the ground attack, but Live Oak held him to 54 yards in 13 attempts.

Freshman Kyler Fossett scored the lone touchdown. Fossett had seven carries for 37 yards rushing.

On defense, Johnny Gomez led with four tackles. Thompson, Cash Lee, and Matthew Castillo had two tackles each.

Thompson had one kickoff return of 10 yards and Fossett returned one for 14 yards.

Brodie Fisher converted the lone PAT kick.
