Jonesboro and Oglesby play district basketball

OGLESBY- The District 25-1A boys basketball game between the Jonesboro Eagles and the Oglesby Tigers resulted in an Eagles victory 49-38 at Oglesby High School Gym on Jan. 7.

The district matchup consisted of the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams putting all their effort until the final buzzer. Jonesboro boys rise to (5-8 overall, 2-1 in district) as Oglesby falls to (2-4 overall, 0-2 in district), according to MaxPreps. The Jonesboro girls improve to (1-7 overall, 1-1 in district), while Oglesby drops to (2-4 overall, 0-2 district), according to MaxPreps.

Jonesboro’s boys’ basketball Coach Chris Simon was happy with the way his team played against the Tigers.

“All nine players stepped up big tonight and played minutes,” Simon said. “We closed the game well and got our second win in district. 

Sophomore Jacob Cisneros led the Eagles with 10 points. Cisneros had a rebound, a steal, and a block.

Senior Ian Shoaf finished with 8 points while finishing the game with 12 rebounds and 2 steals.

Sophomore Garrett Young had 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Senior Layton Blanchard finished with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals. 

Senior Nat Hilliker finished with 6 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Manny Torres finished the game with 6 points and 2 steals. 

“This was the second game with all my guys,” Simon said. “I felt we played a lot better tonight.”

The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Tigers 31-24. Alissa Shumate finished the game with 12 points. Payton Green finished with 9 points, scoring three field goals and converting on a 3-pointer. Green shot 4 for 6 on free throws.

Jonesboro boys’ and girls’ played Gholston on Tuesday night results from the game will be in an upcoming issue. The Eagles will travel Aquilla on Jan. 14 at Aquilla. Tip-off will begin at 6 p.m. at the Aquilla High School Gym.

 

OGLESBY

The Oglesby boys lost a tough district game on Jan. 7, but they played hard until the end. According to OHS head coach Jeb Dixon, turnovers and pressure plagued the Tigers late in the game. Dixon is confident that his guys will “get better because of it.”

Junior Blake Thompson led the team in points finishing with 13. Thompson made a pair of 3-pointers and three field goals. 

Freshman Kyler Fossett followed Thompson finishing with 11 points. The freshman scored on a triad of field goals and made 5 out of 9 on free throws. Sophomore Brodie Fisher completed the game with 9 points making three field goals and a three-pointer.

The Oglesby girls came up short against Jonesboro, fighting hard to win. OHS Coach Jeb Dixon gave his analysis on the game.

“Kids played hard defensively,” Dixon said. “We are just young and missed some opportunities.”

Leading the way in points for the Tigers was junior Lacie Luckie finishing the game with 10 points. Luckie cashed in on a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of field goals.

Senior Summer Newman finished the game with 6 points converting two 3-pointers.

The Tigers boys’ and girls’ basketball team played Cranfills Gap Wednesday night. Results from the game will be in an upcoming issue. On Friday, Jan. 14, the Tigers will play the Abbott Panthers at the Oglesby High School Gym. Tip-off will start at 6 p.m. for the girls, and 7 p.m. for the boys.
