Big crowd stirs Hornets in district battle, but Lions pull out win

The No. 11 state-ranked Gatesville Hornets volleyball team and theArticle Brownwood Lions tied up in a playoff atmosphere Tuesday night in a District 6-4A match at Gatesville High School.

Brownwood emerged with a comeback with some strong serving to win the final three games of the match.

Brownwood won, 18-25, 25-18. 25-12, 27-25.

Both teams are 1-1 in district play.

“Our fans were rowdy and louder than I have ever heard,’’ Gatesville coach Janey Weber said. “Brownwood is a solid team. We came up short in serve receive which hurt us in games two, three and four. We are ready to bounce back and have been going 90 miles per hour to prepare for the rest of district.’’

The Hornets face North Central Texas Academy in a non-district match Friday, Oct. 1.

The team faces Glen Rose Oct. 5 and Stephenville Oct. 8 in home matches.

The Hornets are 23-6 on the season.

                Against Brownwood, Barrett Boyd and Khloe Mathews had big hitting games along with Kaleigh Haywood.

Seniors Tasha Thoms and Avery Mullins also had solid performances and were both leaders in getting the crowd fired up.

Lola Barron and Charlee Barron played scrappy volleyball and were big in keeping runs going.

Evant dropped its match with the Tolar Rattlers, 21-25, 14-25, 12-24, Tuesday night.

Emiliegh Burton led the way with 11 kills, two aces and four blocks.
