Business and governmental offices across Coryell County will join the rest of the nation in celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday.
In 1789, George Washington set aside a National Day of Thanks.
Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for a federal Thanksgiving holiday in 1861, writing that the country’s gifts from God “should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.”
Closings in the immediate area include:
GOVERNMENT
The City of Gatesville, City of Oglesby, and Coryell County Courthouse will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24. The City of Evant will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and will remain closed the following day on Friday, Nov. 25.
The Farm Service Agency will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24.
SCHOOLS
The Independent School Districts of Gatesville and Evant will be closed Monday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Nov. 25. The Gatesville Independent School District Administration Office will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24. The Jonesboro Independent School District will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Friday, Nov. 25. The Oglesby Independent School District will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25.
The Boys and Girls Club of Gatesville will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24.
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Cadence and Extraco Bank will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and will open the following day, Nov. 25. Educator’s Credit Union will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and will be open on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26. The First National Banks of Gatesville, Evant, and Oglesby will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and will remain open on Friday, Nov. 25 until 2 p.m.
POST OFFICES
All local post offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24, and no box service will be provided.
LIBRARY
The Gatesville Public Library will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, Friday, Nov. 25, and Saturday, Nov. 26.
SENIOR CENTER
The Gatesville Multi-Service Center will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25.
NEWSPAPER
The Gatesville Messenger will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25.
