Hunter named new GHS football coach

Gatesville ISD turns to defensive coordinator, 2007 GHS grad

 It’s official - Aaron Hunter, who guided the Gatesville Hornet defense as defensive coordinator for the past two football seasons will take over the role of head coach for the Gatesville High School football team.

Hunter will be entering his third season with the Hornets.

He is a 2007 graduate of Gatesville High School and earned a bachelor’s degree for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2007 with an emphasis on exercise sports science.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene where he coached defensive backs and earned a master’s degree in counseling and human development.

Hunter spent four years as a defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at New Caney High School, which is located in the Houston area.

He then returned to Central Texas and coached defensive backs and was special teams coordinator for the Class 6A Belton Tigers football team.

Hunter and his wife, Roxy, have a daughter, Nayvee, 5, and a son, Briggs, age 2.

Hunter takes over the head coaching spot from Luke Howard, who took over the team in 2020 and helped guide the Hornets to back-to-back playoff berths in 2020 and 2021. Howard and Hunter were teammates at GHS.

As a senior during the 2006 football season, Hunter played linebacker and earned honorable mention all-district honors, finishing that season with 48 tackles for the Hornets.
