Oglesby junior high boys win Walnut Springs tournament

Coach Julian Helms led the Oglesby Junior High Tigers to victory on Saturday, Jan. 27, defeating the Jonesboro Eagles 38-23 to capture the Walnut Springs Tournament Championship. 

The Tigers worked their way through the tournament, beginning with a 44-15 victory over the Kopprel Eagles on Thursday, Jan. 25. They played the Iredell Dragons at noon on Jan. 27, and defeated them 53-23 to advance to the championship. 

In game one vs the Kopprel Eagles, the Tiger’s leading scorer was Holdyn Goff, and he scored 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists, five steals, and one blocked shot. Evan Williamson had six points, four rebounds. Mason Marquez scored four points and two rebounds. Liam Ammerman scored two points, and Couper Wulfkhule scored two points. Hunter Insall scored two points. AJ Marfa scored two points. 

In game two vs the Iredell Dragons, the Tiger’s leading scorer was Holdyn Goff with 25 points, 16 rebounds for a double/double, five assists, and four steals. Evan Williamson pumped in 24 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Liam Ammerman dropped in two points, and Rancher Jeffcoat added two points. 

In game three, the championship vs the Jonesboro Eagles, Holdyn Goff led the scoring with 19 points, 10 rebounds for double/double, four assists, three steals, and one blocked shot. Evan Williamson scored 12 points, two rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Mason Marquez scored four points, five rebounds, and one steal. Caiden Brinkley scored two points and two rebounds. Jacob De La Torre rounded out the scoring by hitting a free throw for one point.
