Lady Hornets fall, still in playoff hunt

Posted

Despite dropping their last two district games at Connally and at Salado, the Gatesville Lady Hornets basketball team is still alive for a postseason berth.

The Lady Hornets (11-16, 1-3) currently sit fifth in the district standings with one-game left to play in the opening round of games. They hold a one-game lead over Robinson (0-4 in 23-4A) and sit just behind China Spring (1-3 in 23-4A) for the fourth playoff spot.

Gatesville topped Robinson in the district opener but fell to China Spring. The Lady Hornets and Lady Rockets will rematch on Jan. 23, and Gatesville will play China Spring on Jan. 26. A sweep of both games and a Robinson win over China Spring on Feb. 2 would secure a playoff spot for Gatesville.

Against Connally, the Lady Hornets were without second-leading scorer and rebounder Taylor Coward who averages 11.8 points per game and grabs 8.7 rebounds per game.

Emma Pollard led the Lady Hornets in scoring and rebounding in the 59-33 loss with 12 points and ten rebounds. Guard Paige Sentillas grabbed seven rebounds, and Laura Trejo had five rebounds. Angelina Jimenez scored nine points and grabbed two rebounds in 12 minutes of action.

Gatesville out-rebounded Connally 37-36 in the game.

The Lady Hornets will welcome No. 2 La Vega to Gatesville on Jan. 19 before starting their second round of district play at home against Robinson.
