Spur Nutrition celebrated for service

Posted

This is one in a series of articles about local businesses that won awards at the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Jan. 28.

For nearly two years, people in search of an energy boost, looking for meal replacement options or wanting to lead a healthier lifestyle have turned to Spur Nutrition, located at 103 S. Seventh St. on the Coryell County Courthouse Square not far from the Place Law Office.

Jessie Jonasson opened the shop in June 2021 after successfully owning and operating The Healthy Hub in Copperas Cove since 2017. Jonasson grew up in Cove and has spent much of her life there, and she said she has been impressed by the way Gatesville residents have welcomed her to the community.

"I started out as a customer (of the Cove nutrition shop) and fell in love with the product, and that resulted in me growing a passion for it," Jonasson said. "I ended up purchasing it."

Seeing an opportunity to expand her business to Gatesville, Jonasson opened the store here just as the worst of COVID-19 was wrapping up.

Many of the customers of Spur Nutrition have a need in mind when they enter the shop.

"They're definitely either looking for a breakfast shake or getting an energy boost so they can make it through the day," Jonasson said.

One of the shop's employees is Quenby Dixon, a Gatesville High School graduate.

"Our most popular items are the energy teas," Dixon said. "Energy bars are also popular. The banana nut bread shake is a top seller, and we also have a honey nut Cheerio shake."

Being able to offer healthy options that provide a boost of energy is something Jonasson said she enjoys.

"We are able to give people a shot of clean energy with caffeine and vitamins but without the sugar," she said. "People are able to get their vitamins — B1 through B12. It is all the yumminess without the guilt."

Spur Nutrition is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

"Our busiest time is probably 6 to 9 and then again closer to lunch," Jonasson said. "It's all pretty much about offering healthy options on the go."

She and Dixon, as well as the shop's three other employees, are also wellness coaches.

"We help people who are interested in weight loss, enjoying more nutritious things and those who are just interested in fitness in general," Jonasson said. "We specialize in working with those who want to lose weight or just get in better shape."

Jonasson said one of her favorite items offered at Spur Nutrition is the blue raspberry pina colada tea. Dixon said her favorite is the strawberry watermelon tea with N-R-G, which provides an energy boost.

Before working at Spur, Dixon was a personal trainer. Before she owned The Healthy Hub and Spur Nutrition, Jonasson worked as a nanny and personal assistant.

Jonasson said she is thankful for the community's support, and also for the customer service award her business received.

"I am super grateful," she said. "One of the things I always focus on is providing the best customer service I can. We get to know our customers and I can remember their favorite drink. I have enjoyed getting to know the people here in Gatesville. It's been fantastic."
