Meals on Wheels in need of drivers

Posted

Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver meals to local, homebound elderly folks. Meals on Wheels is a federally funded program for older adults who are homebound, unable to prepare a meal, don’t drive, and have no one to cook for them.

The Meals on Wheels program provides home-delivered, nutritious meals that provide seniors in the community with support, which allows them to remain living in their own homes. This typically involves delivering a nutritious meal, a friendly visit, or a quick safety check.

The volunteers are expected to deliver a meal while generally checking in with the clients to make sure they are doing well through a friendly greeting or small talk.

Gatesville needs volunteer drivers Monday through Friday with meals picked up at the Senior Center. Drivers are needed for four different routes. There are four different routes in Gatesville, and each Wednesday a route to Hamilton is taken. Anywhere from 10 to 14 clients are seen each day per route.

At the end of last year, the Meals on Wheels program stopped reimbursing volunteers for their mileage driven. Vehicles need to be provided by the volunteers as well.

To volunteer, contact the Senior Center Director Pam Rudolph at 254-865-8234.

The Gatesville Senior Center is located at 208 North Lutterloh Ave. in Gatesville.
