If you didn't attend the Bluegrass event, you missed a great time

Posted

I’ve heard that the crowd was great, and everyone enjoyed all the goings on. The bookstore ladies enjoyed visits from people they had not seen in quite a while, and they hope to see them a lot more in 2024. Remember, most everything in the store, including the more than 6,000 books, is “buy what you want, pay what you want,” and all monies go toward the various local charities that the bookstore supports. I suggest marking your calendar right this second for the next “super Saturday” events in Pearl—Feb. 3. There’s no place like Pearl.

The next Pearl Community Center quarterly board meeting will be Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m., at the Community Center. The public is invited to attend.

What were the Pleasure and Profit Club ladies doing about this time in the year 1934 (90 years ago)? Let’s check in on these industrious, community-minded ladies: Jan. 4, 1934…The club met with Mrs. Elouise Nabors. Having no work prepared, the social hour was spent laughing and talking, and those who wished learned how to make bound buttonholes and how to sew on buttons. Miss Mae Basham was the instructor. The president called the house to order for the business meeting. The minutes were approved. The roll was called, noting the absence of a few members. Two dollars were paid for dues. Some paid up for several months. Since then, $1.60 had been paid to Robert Manning for the freight on the wicker suit for the school, leaving $3.96 in the treasury. New officers were elected:  President-Miss Bessie Earl Whitt; Vice President-Mamie Franks; Secretary/Treasurer-Eula Mae Cox; Assistant Secretary-Bessie Smith; and Reporter-Myra Myrl Shook. We decided on the Greek Puzzle Quilt pattern for the quilt which we must have for the Rally Day. We also discussed some cloth to make slip covers for cushions on the wicker suit. It was also decided that we elect a Critic, which was voted on, and Myra Myrl was elected to fill this office. Also, a motion was made and seconded and voted on that we get blue and white striped seersucker for our spring and summer club dresses and keep the ones we have for fall and winter. After the adjournment to meet with Ora Mae next club day, we were served cake, peaches, whipped cream and hot cocoa. Signed Eula Mae Cox. (When I read these excerpts from the Pleasure and Profit Club book, available in the Book Cottage for $15, I always wish I could have been there! By the way, does anyone know what Rally Day was or why the school needed a wicker suit? Also, what did the office of “Critic” entail? Email me if you have any info, please).

This week’s Bible verse comes from Ephesians 5: 1, 2—Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. NIV

Please pray for continued blessings of rain, for our veterans and service men and women, our country, our schools, our local, state, and national government officials, our law officers, Christians throughout the world, and Israel. (My list just keeps getting longer, but I feel like you all add to it yourselves daily … and thank you for all those prayers!)
