On Monday, Nov. 13, the Gatesville ISD Board of Trustees met and discussed the results of the recent school board election.

The board gave special recognition to Jimmie Ferguson who served on the board from November of 2020 until November of 2023 when he lost his bid for re-election during the recent election.

GISD Superintendent Dr. Barrett Pollard described Ferguson with the following statement, “During his time on the school board, he helped approve many outstanding projects and initiatives. Despite our budget shortfall, he was always supportive of raises for staff members. For all of this, we are grateful.”

During a special meeting of the board on Nov. 16, the summary of precinct election returns was reported as Charles Ament receiving total votes of 1,328, Jimmie Ferguson receiving 680 votes, Jeff Coward receiving 711 votes, Loyd Hopson receiving 1,182 votes, and Calvin Ford receiving 765 votes.

In addition to canvassing the votes, newly-elected Loyd Hopson and incumbent Calvin Ford were sworn into office with Charles Ament being absent for the swearing-in ceremony. Ament was sworn in at a later date.

Dr. Pollard commented on the election saying, “We had five really good candidates in our election. I’m looking forward to working with the three who were elected.”

Loyd Hopson, the newly elected board member, said “Being elected to the school board is a great honor and a surprise. I feel very blessed to have been elected. I’m very honored and I’m looking forward to doing my part in the school with teachers, students, and everyone in the community.  I’m looking forward to helping our educators and students to achieve their personal best.”

The two re-elected school board members issued the following statements. Charles Ament, the current school board president, said, “Gatesville ISD is fortunate to have caring teachers and staff. Under the leadership of Dr. Pollard, students are improving in academics and enjoy extra-curricular experiences. This makes for a positive school board that is proud and supportive of our school system.”

Calvin Ford remarked, “I’m truly blessed, and it is my hope and prayer that I can continue to be the elected official that everyone wants me to be.”
