In honor of Earth Day, H-E-B partnered with local schools in the area to collect plastic bags and Gatesville Intermediate School participated. The collection started on March 6 and ended on April 13.
The Gatesville ISD Gifted and Talented program had the responsibility to keep count throughout the month and came up with the final number of 3,467 plastic bags collected. For participating, the Intermediate campus will receive a $150 H-E-B gift card.
Earth Day is celebrated annually to honor the achievements of the environmental movement and to raise awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. The national holiday is on April 22 each year in the United States.
In the 1960s Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin senator, was inspired by activist groups to create a national celebration uniting the environmental movement. From then on, the United States has come together each year to honor the special day.
