Columbus Day is a holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492.
Although Columbus Day is no longer a mandated state or federal holiday in Texas, many businesses and governmental offices will observe Monday, Oct. 10, in celebration of Columbus Day.
Closings and openings in the immediate area include:
GOVERNMENT
The city offices of Gatesville and Oglesby will be closed Monday, Oct. 10 while the city offices of Evant will remain open.
The Farm Service Agency will also be closed on Monday.
SCHOOLS
The Gatesville Independent School District, Jonesboro Independent School District, Oglesby Independent School District, and the Evant Independent School District will be closed Monday.
The Boys & Girls Club, Gatesville Branch, will remain open.
LIBRARY
The Gatesville Public Library will be closed Monday.
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Extraco Banks, BancorpSouth, Educators Credit Union, and The First National Bank of Gatesville, Evant, and Oglesby will be closed on Monday.
POST OFFICES
The post offices of Gatesville, Jonesboro, Flat, Oglesby, Mound, Evant and Purmela will be closed Monday.
SENIOR CENTER
The Gatesville Senior Multi-Service Center will remain open on Monday.
NEWSPAPER
The Gatesville Messenger will remain open on Monday.
