Applications for these positions must be high school graduates and have attained the age of 18. Applicants must be capable of performing moderate physical exertion. Mrs. Mears was named manager at the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce. Due to the scarcity of manpower, the prevailing high wage scale and the limited budget of the Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors decided that it was impractical to hire a man as manager of the Chamber of Commerce. They decided to proceed with their recent setup and named Mrs. Mears as manager in order to give her more authority to conduct the work of the office.

The movement is in keeping with the present war program of drafting women to fill the places usually occupied by men. It is the second time in the life of Mrs. Mears that she has been drafted to fill a man’s place. During World War I when manpower became short, without being officially given the title, she discharged all the duties of the principal of the Gatesville High School. She was also the coach of the boys’ basketball, and it is to be hoped that her present duties will be discharged as successfully as those duties were performed. Old-timers will recall that during the five years that she coached the basketball team, Gatesville lost only two games. This use of a woman in an official position is also in keeping with the programs of the war department, for a WAAC company is soon to be quartered at Camp Hood.
