Pearl News Nov. 3, 2021

Posted

Mark your calendars for the next Pearl weekend, November 5-6. Ronald Medart is going to fire up the barbeque pit under the pavilion at The Pearl Community Center. Bring your own meats and a side dish to share. The grill will be ready at 6 p.m. Plan to stay, so bring your RV, camper, or tent. Then, you will already be there for the November 6 Pearl Bluegrass Event! Everyone is invited.

The Nov. 6 Bluegrass Event will be very special as The Family Sowell will be performing on the stage. If you would like to play on the stage, please contact Ronald Medart at 254-865-6013 to schedule your time. If you aren’t a picker, you can be a grinner in the auditorium. The free stage show usually begins about 1 p.m., and all are welcome. Don’t forget to stop by the kitchen for delicious, reasonably priced hamburgers, sandwiches, and pie.

The Pearl Cottage Bookstore will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 6. The cottage houses more than 6,000 books, and you can find all sorts of other treasures as well. Most items are “buy what you want, pay what you want.” It’s the friendliest place in the county to shop. You’ll leave there with treasures, smiles, and new friends, too.

There is an Estate Sale happening on Nov. 6 in downtown Ireland, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The address is 7010 FM 932. You can find lots of antique furniture and other antique items like glassware. Ireland is a very neat, historic area, and you will enjoy your scenic trip to this little community.

Ghosts of Halloween Past

About 12 or so years ago, Linda Ray talked Kay Pruett into being a ghost for the kids who were going to go through the Pearl Cemetery on Halloween night on a hayride. The plan was for the pair to jump from out from behind tombstones with flashlights under their chins to give the kids a frightening but fun experience.

However, right in the middle of the cemetery, both flashlights burned out. The kids could not see the ghosts, but they might have heard ghostly Kay emit a string of expletives directed toward Linda. The now famous words that Linda always uses to get Kay to join her in her many ventures were then and still are something like this: “Won’t this be fun?!” (Actually, that is how Linda convinced Kay to join her in opening the Pearl Cottage Bookstore and Resale Shop along with other ventures. You can, on occasion, hear a replay of those creative words to this day). After the hayride continued through downtown Pearl, the kids did get to see an actual ghost. Standing outside the old downtown Pearl store (long gone since then) was an easily recognizable apparition.

Kay and Linda had followed the hayride and heard a couple of the kids say, “Hey, that’s Mrs. Adams. I recognize her shoes!” I bet Mrs. Maureen Adams got a kick out of the kids who saw her ghostly presence the next day at school. I can hear her chuckle now. That’s what happens to the young and the rest of us from time to time in Pearl — and there’s no place like it.

The closing Bible verse for this week comes from Luke 6:27,28 — “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, (28) bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” ESV
