TWENTY YEARS AGO

(2001)

    --Cynthia Johnston was honored with a reception for her retirement after 20 years of service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

    --Gene and Bess Bond of the King Community were honored with a family dinner in Gatesville in celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary.

    --James Zeigler, a student at Gatesville High School, was attending a summer college program at Cornell University.

    --James and Polly West were attending the Beth Moore Bible Study Conference at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa.

    --Janice S. Jackson was named assistant area engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation’s Gatesville Area office.

    --The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) installed new signs in school zones along U.S Highway 84 in Gatesville.

 

THIRTY YEARS AGO

(1991)

    --Sponsored by the Gatesville Lions club, sixteen year old Tommy Ray of Gatesville attended the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville.

    --Floy (Peggy Niemeier) Sparkman was to be honored on her 90th birthday with a reception in the fellowship building of the Gatesville Church of Christ.

    --W.W. and Ruby Shuler of Evant were to be honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception and buffet at the Elk’s Lodge in Temple.

    --Craven Power and Chris Gribble enjoyed practicing some soccer on the new soccer Field at the Coryell Activities Complex.

    --Members of the Hay Valley Baptist Church and their guests celebrated one of the biggest events in the church’s history, the 100th anniversary of the little church.

 

FORTY YEARS AGO

(1981)

    --Concrete work for the new six land drive-in facility at the Guaranty Bank and Trust had been completed.

    --David Crosby, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, was to be the evangelist for a revival service.

    --Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kiphen were to be honored on their 25th wedding anniversary with a reception. Eugene Kiphen and the former Virginia Gamblin were married July 27, 1956, in the Loving Baptist Church.

    --Gene Manske, Guaranty Bank executive and a member of the Gatesville Lions Club, had been appointed deputy district governor of Region V of the Lions Club.

    --Samuel P. Martin had been elected treasurer of the Fort Worth Post of the Society of American Military Engineers.

 

FIFTY YEARS AGO

(1971)

    --Cindy Easley was chosen Coryell County pecan queen and became the second Gatesville girl to reign as the state queen.

    --A total of $112,000 in time warrants were issued to pay for the enlarging and remodeling of Coryell County Memorial Hospital.

    --Esteen Williams, mayor of Fort Gates, was able to stake a valid claim to Coryell County’s cantaloupe-growing championship with a cantaloupe weighing 14 pounds.

    --Holland McLean of Gatesville was to be the speaker for a youth meeting at Farmers Branch. McLean was the minister of the West Main Street Church of Christ.

                --Marshall King, a farmer and rancher in the Flat community received the honorary Lone Star Farmer degree from Central Texas Future Farmers.
