Glenn Deavers, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), age 91, of Abilene, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2023, in Abilene.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert Whitefield and Pastor Jeff Addison officiating. Interment with full military honors by the Joint Base San Antonio Base Honor Guard, followed at King Cemetery. Glenn Winifred Deavers was born on June 3, 1931, in the Springhill community of Coryell County to the late Virgel and Della Witte Deavers. He graduated from Gatesville High School in 1948, where he played football. He then attended Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, where he played on the football team for two years. He entered the United States Air Force in 1951 and received his pilot wings in 1954. On Mother's Day in 1968, he went to Vietnam where he flew the supersonic F4 Phantom II bomber jet. Glenn served for 341 days in Vietnam and flew 212 Combat Missions. He received many commendation decorations for his valor, including the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross with One Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired as Lt. Col. in 1973, with over twenty years of service. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University. He entered a second career as an Industrial Engineering Manager in Dallas / Fort Worth with General Dynamics & Vought Company until his retirement.
Out of all his many accomplishments and phenomenal adventures, Glenn’s most profound achievement was being an amazing father and husband. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed telling funny stories and jokes. Glenn loved horses, hog hunting, sports, 42 Dominoes and was a horse breeder and member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He was a former member of Proctor Baptist Church and current member of Ridgemont Baptist Church in Abilene.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clayton Deavers; and sisters, Gloria Koch and Ethelyn (Pod) Harper; and brother-in-laws, Fred Koch and Travis Harper.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Madelynne Dickie Deavers; children, Greg Deavers and wife, Carla, Lisa Johnson, Kami Deavers, Rick Corley and wife, Cindy, David Corley and wife, Karen, Tommy Corley, Debbie Barnes and husband, Tom Hale; numerous grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Glenn’s family requests that memorials be made to the Coryell Museum and Historical Center, P.O. Box 24, Gatesville, TX 76528.
