TWENTY YEARS AGO (2003)

The Boys and Girls club in Gatesville appeared to be on the verge of starting up.

A new roof was being installed on the Jonesboro school due to a problem with leaks.

Librarian Faye Nichols read “Albert’s Thanksgiving” by Leslie Tryon during Storytime at the Gatesville Public Library.

The annual Gatesville Garden’s Tour of Homes was set to begin.

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Bill Henderson donated a piece of the “Bridge over the River Kwai” to the Coryell Museum and Historical Center. Henderson was the bombardier who destroyed the bridge during World War II.

THIRTY YEARS AGO (1993)

The Gatesville School Board addressed the issue of classroom overcrowding.

City Christmas decorations went up along Main Street.

The Gatesville Country Club was set to hold a Christmas dance.

Two new officers, David Miller and Ernest Spratling, joined the Gatesville Police Department.

The Coryell County Shrine Club donated a check to Karem Shrine Temple to support the Shriner’s children’s orthopedic hospitals and burn treatment centers.

FORTY YEARS AGO (1983)

The Coryell County Collectors Club prepared to hold their Christmas dinner.

Gatesville Florist advertised an 11x14 wall portrait for 99 cents.

Six Hornet football players made the first all-district team: Clayton Williams, Charles Mayberry, Keith Bankhead, Sam Best, Homer McDonald, and Harold Ratliff.

Gatesville’s motel business was thriving. The two operating motels were Chateau Ville/Best Western Motel, and the Post Oak Motel.

Members of the Coryell County Extension Homemakers were set to sponsor a bake sale at the Western Auto building.

FIFTY YEARS AGO (1973)

Bob Cummings, of Gatesville, was administered the oath of office as the new district attorney in the 52nd District Court.

Chaplain Tyrone Herring, public education chairman for the Coryell County unit of the American Cancer Society announced that films on cancer were available to local clubs and organizations.

Mrs. La Rue Burke won a man’s Bulova wristwatch in a Christmas contest held by Foster Drug Store.

Lane’s Chapel was to host their regular monthly singing.

The quarterly meeting of the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) of the Coryell Baptists Association was set to be held at the First Baptist Church of Gatesville.
