The remaining Pearl Cottage Bookstore days and Pearl Bluegrass events are Nov. 4 and Dec. 2. The bookstore is full of all sorts of new items including afghans, books, dishes, appliances, very nice old books, jewelry, and men’s and women’s clothes. Be sure and visit Pearl on those dates and bring friends. Everyone is welcome. There’s no place like Pearl!

Two interesting entries in The Pleasure and Profit Club minutes compilation (re-typed by Linda Ray) were from Oct. 16, 1941, and Nov. 11, 1943:

1)      The club met with Selma Lacy. The working period was spent in piecing quilts. The president called the house to order for the business session. The roll call was answered by 18 members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The president stated that the “Stamps Baxter Song Fellows” would put on a concert sponsored by the club on Nov. 14.Plans were made for the club to put on a stunt for the Halloween Carnival. $.25 in dues was paid, making $19.68 in the treasury. The club adjourned to meet with Bessie Smith on Oct. 30. Cookies and punch were served.

2)      Mrs. Whitt and Bessie Earle entertained the club. The work for the afternoon was sewing buttons on Red Cross garments. The president called the house to order at the usual time. Nine members answered the roll call. The minutes of the two previous meetings were read and approved. No business was discussed as there was not a quorum present. $1.35 was paid making a total of $3.53. Two cents was paid for stamps, leaving $3.51 in the treasury. The club adjourned to meet with Vera Whitt on Nov. 25. Refreshments of sandwiches, celery, and cocoa were served to all present.

As you can see, these ladies were always doing something that benefited the community even during a world war. Patriotic, enterprising, dedicated, industrious, loving—these are only a few of the words describing the ladies of The Pleasure and Profit Club. These are our ancestors from which so many in Pearl are honored to have descended. Be sure and stop by the Pearl Cottage Bookstore on Nov. 4, and pick up your copy of The Pleasure and Profit Club for only $15. You’ll be so glad you did.

This week’s Bible verse comes from Romans 1:17—For in the Gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” NIV

Please pray for rain, our country, Israel, and our schools.
