During the Jan. 22nd meeting of the Gatesville Independent School District Board of Trustees, educators Phillip and Shawna Martin were honored during the Staff Spotlight presentation.

GISD Athletic Director Rickey Phillips had the following to say about Phillip and Shawna Martin: "They have been home-run hires for Gatesville ISD. They go above and beyond the job description to help wherever needed. They are both great at their respective jobs - Phillip as high school cross country and girls track head coach and Shawna as the junior high girl’s coordinator. They are great with our students, they support all other GISD athletic teams and programs, and they have a genuine interest and love for being a Hornet."

Suzy Penrod, principal at Gatesville Junior High, had the following to say about Shawna Martin: "Shawna's dedication to her students and athletes is unparalleled. Her tireless efforts go well beyond the classroom and the court, directly contributing to the development of every student and athlete she mentors. Her ability to consistently support our campus and her ever-present smile makes her a source of positive energy and inspiration. We are so grateful to have Shawna as part of the junior high."

Liz Shoaf, principal at Gatesville High School, had the following to say about Phillip Martin: “From the moment he set foot on the GHS campus, Phillip has modeled an amazing work ethic and commitment to doing whatever it takes to make sure students succeed. In addition to coaching and working with special education students, Phillip teaches a homeroom group of students, so our core academic teachers have time to teach intervention groups. He also collaborated with our adopt a school battalion in the fall so they could take part in our cross country meets. His team player mindset is cultivating strong relationships on campus and in the community.”
