Local tennis player serves community

The Gatesville High School National Honor Society inducted approximately 18 new members at the close of the 2021-2022 school year.

For students to be accepted and placed, they must demonstrate academic achievement by achieving a GPA of 3.75 or higher and meet the requirements of the following chapters: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. In addition, once accepted into the NHS, students must complete 25 service hours, six of which are a project and are to be completed within the given timeline.

Senior Slone Early, newly inducted into the National Honor Society, completed his required six hours of a community service project during the summer. He served the community by providing free tennis lessons to prepare incoming first-year players and others interested in tennis an opportunity to improve their skills.

Players attending the camp improved their technique, strategy, and endurance with several drills. They also improved their footwork through ladder drills, shot selection through targets, and a net extender, and became more comfortable with competition through multiple games and activities. Incoming freshman and junior high players were introduced to new drills they will experience while on the Gatesville High School tennis team, such as "Four Corners."

Slone completed his remaining community service hours helping elementary and intermediate-age students at the Ridgewood Country Club Summer Tennis Camp.
