Local students excel at the Fort Worth Livestock Show

Various local students competed at the Fort Worth Livestock Show that was held last week and came home with awards.

Caleb Mannix, Mia Conley, Marcy Conley, and Levin Lynch of Coryell County 4-H took home third place as a team in the Junior Division of the Range and Pasture Plant Identification Contest.

Marcy Conley of Coryell County 4-H also took home fourth place as an individual in the Junior Division of the Range and Pasture Plant Identification Contest.

Held at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, adjacent to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo grounds, the contest was open to 4-H and FFA members from across the state as well as individuals.

The Junior Division included students aged nine through high school freshman.

Contestants were asked to identify a range of plants from the more than 120 on the master plant list of range and pasture plants adaptable to Texas conditions. Students had 45 seconds to identify, write in the common name, and check the characteristics of each plant in the contest.

The winning team in each division received a plaque sponsored by Beggs Cattle Company of Fort Worth. Gold, silver, and bronze medals were presented to the top 10 high individuals by the Fort Worth Farm and Ranch Club.

The contestants were sponsored jointly by the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Agriculture Science, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

The 2024 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo ran through Friday, Jan. 12, to Saturday, Feb. 3.
