GISD students display Veterans Day artwork at Coryell Museum

Students at Gatesville Independent School District were recently able to participate in a partnership with the Coryell Museum and Historical Center to recognize veterans through artwork.

Coryell Museum volunteer, Scott Alexander, first approached GISD superintendent, Dr. Barrett Pollard, about the possibility of including student awareness with veterans and incorporating that with the museum.

“This started out as a partnership between the school district and the museum,” Alexander said. After meeting with Dr. Pollard, the two decided to have an artwork competition showcasing Veterans Day at the museum using artwork from kindergarten through 12th grade.

“We are trying to get kids to visit the museum and learn about local and state history,” Alexander said. In reference to the partnership, Pollard said, “Scott and I as well as other museum volunteers brainstormed several collaborative projects. The first idea was a Veterans Day showcase.”

The display of student artwork honoring veterans at the museum includes the following students: first grade, Kamdyn Redford; second grade, Chance Farley; third grade, Slater Steel; sixth grade students Juliett Medina, Allie McPherson, Mollie Ingraham, Veronika Hankins-Bowyer, Peyton Richie, Amanda Campos, Sariah Foster, Shyla Cleveland; eighth grade students Sariah Trayah, Ashlynn Slaughter, Ryan Connolly; 10th grade students Lillian Alexander, Callie Smith; 11th grade, Jana Kroeger; and 12th grade, Dillon Tyson.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the museum to see the amazing Veterans Day artwork created by GISD students. Coryell Museum and Historical Center is located at 718 E. Main Street in Gatesville.
