GISD behavior teacher rose through the ranks

The adjustment for a first-year teacher can sometimes be quite a challenge, but when the new teacher is already a familiar face and knows the students, it can make the transition go much smoother.

That is the case for Zach Tyler, who went from a paraprofessional position in the behavior classroom at Gatesville Intermediate School to being named the teacher.

"He worked diligently to get his teacher certification.... We are so excited to have Mr. Tyler back on campus with us this year in this new capacity," said Gatesville ISD Superintendent Barrett Pollard. "His continued presence in that classroom has really given stability and continuity to our students and other staff members. He has gone above and beyond in his new lead role of the PASS/Behavior program.

"Mr. Tyler puts student safety and learning at the forefront of his daily duties as he wants each student in his program to excel and be successful. It is with great passion, patience, and student understanding that Mr. Tyler has created a positive environment, and a great start to our '22-'23 school year."

Pollard added that teaching in the behavior classroom can be difficult, but said Tyler's steady, calm demeanor helps set the tone for success.

Asked his assessment of the first few weeks of school, Tyler said, "It's been good – I'm already used to it. It's the same classroom, and the same kids."

The Gatesville ISD Board of Trustees recognized Tyler during the Staff Spotlight portion of the Sept. 19 board meeting.

"Zach said he recalls being a 'knucklehead' in school, and he looks back fondly on the teachers that helped him in those circumstances," Pollard said. "He hopes that he can be that teacher for his students – someone they see who really cares, makes an impact, and creates a difference in their lives."
