The Gatesville boys’ soccer team took on Kennedale on Tuesday in the first round of the high school soccer playoffs. The boys fell behind, 0-2, in the first ten minutes of the game but fought their way back with a goal from Angel Almendariz and headed into halftime trailing 1-2. The boys came out of half with relentless play that led to three goals by Almendariz, Asa Hardcastle, and Oswaldo Leon, in a span of five minutes, to gain a 4-2 advantage.  Kennedale struck back with a goal at the 20-minute mark to make the score 4-3. The Hornets then came back with two more goals from Leon and Almendariz. A late goal from Kennedale made the final score 6-4. Assisting in the goals for the Hornets were Jack Armstrong, Hector Silva, Alex Bueno, Sergio Bucio Rivera, and Harcastle. The Hornets received strong play from goalkeeper Javier Bonilla and strong defense from Abraham Almendariz, Malichi Olvera, Damian Guerrero, Hayden Blanchard, and Ryan Tesar. This was the first playoff win for the GHS boys’ soccer team in nine years.

After becoming bi-district champions, the boys were scheduled to play Fort Worth Diamond Hill Jarvis on Friday at Cleburne High School in the area round of the playoffs.
