Gatesville’s 2nd Grade Classes tour Coryell Museum

Posted

Two 2nd grade classes came per day to see the museum. They had been studying community and there is no better place to study the history of community and the people of Coryell County than at our museum.

The students were very impressed with our huge rooms and large collections. Our four tour guides had 10 students each so we could answer questions and tell them a little bit about each exhibit.

When they went into the Dollhouse Exhibit I told mine they could talk. They started showing their friends the amazing things in the exhibit. There is a General Store, complete with saddles, apples and oranges, sewing machines and a clerk in the back. There is a gas station with pumps on the front, cars and motorcycles, and on the back side you can see where the family lived above the station like they did in the 1930s and 1940s. There is an elegant bathroom in one of the two-story mansions, and it did not take them long to see the child just out of the bathtub and wrapped only in a towel!

The Coryell Courtyard Garden had hundreds of red poppies in bloom when the children visited. I wish you could have seen their faces when they walked into a sea of beautiful red flowers. We have an outhouse in the garden and some of the kids who have been camping knew what it was for and how to use it.

We came out of the garden and they came into the school room. They sat down in the desks and seemed so thrilled to pretend they were back in the one-room schoolhouse days.

They were delighted to see our two Model T’s on display and notice how different they are from cars today.

The 1854 Coryell County Log Jail fascinated them and they were shocked to notice on the small model that the prisoners could not stand up, but had to sit down.

We want to thank the second-grade teachers for bringing their students to see the museum and for having such well-behaved classes.

We allow anyone to come to the museum, even if you are not as cute as a second grader!

Coryell Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. We have a delightful Gift Shop with books from many Coryell County authors. Come anytime we are open or schedule a group tour during or after hours. Call 254-865-5007 to schedule a tour or reserve our historic Gilbreath Room or Coryell Room for your special occasion.
