Exchange Club names students of the month

Posted

The Exchange Club of Gatesville recently named their students of the month chosen for November and December 2022.

Students of the month are seniors and are nominated by a teacher for their outstanding qualities as young people. This recognition is not based solely on academics, but also on character, school and community involvement and leadership abilities that make a well-rounded individual. Exchange Club members receive the nominations and score each one on merit.

Two students are selected each month from September to February. The 12 students that are selected during the year will be recognized again at the Golden Deeds banquet in April. After another round of scoring by club members, the two students with the highest scores will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Exchange Club.

The students of the month chosen for November and December are Ty Warren, Lucas Garcia, Thiele Alvarado and Kallyn Moreland.

Ty Warren was nominated by teacher Lisa Truss who described him as being “one of the top students in his class.” Truss said that Warren likes to take classes that challenge him to be the best that he can be academically. She also said that he is very respectful to teachers, coaches, administrators and his peers. He was also nominated by teacher Bonnie Latham, who described him as a very extraordinary young man who has a “calm and steady demeanor who can create a sense of refuge for students who struggle, and he can be a beacon of hope and consistency for them.”

Warren has been involved in Varsity Tennis where he has reached 4A Academic All District, 2019-2022 4A singles and doubles, and 1st team All District in 2020 and 2021.

He has also received several academic awards and has been involved in the National Honor Society and the PALS program at Gatesville High School.

Warren’s GPA is 4.43 and his class rank is 2 out of 195.

Lucas Garcia was nominated by teacher Michele Fast. She described him as being smart, involved and doing good by everyone. “He forces me to look at how I treat others and re-evaluate how I am acting,” Fast said. “I have been blessed by this young man and his family in more ways than I can explain.”

Garcia has been honored in the UIL sweepstakes in varsity for two years, as well as being Varsity Captain. He also participated in track during his senior year and is a member of the Junior Varsity Tennis team.

Additional school related activities include him being recognized in UIL current events and spelling.  He has served football varsity captain since the ninth grade. Garcia was also involved in Debate at Gatesville High School during ninth grade.

Garcia has been working throughout the summer and during the school term at Walmart.

Thiele Alvarado was nominated by teacher Morgan Smart. She described him as being the “most charismatic individual you will ever meet; he is passionate, kind, friendly, and understanding.” Smart also commented that “he has been chosen time and time again to serve as a leader, not just in athletics, but also in 4-H.” Smart continued by saying that “His ability to balance the demands of school, family, athletics, 4-H, and FFA is outstanding.”

In addition to his academic qualities, Alvarado has been a football Unity Council member in the 10th and 11th grades and a Varsity Captain in the 12th grade.

During his participation with FFA, he was a finalist at the State FFA talent competition. Additional school related activities include being voted “class favorite” in the 9th through the 11th grades.

His volunteer activities have included being the Council Vice Chair for 4-H as well as being a 4-H Ambassador and club president.
