City ends recycling contract with Sunbright

After voting to provide curbside recycling to Gatesville residents earlier this year, the Gatesville City Council decided on July 25 to end a contract with Sunbright Paper Recycling effective the end of this month.

The contract with Sunbright, which began in July 2020, placed a compactor at the Gatesville Public Works Service Center near the fire station. That option will no longer be available for area residents effective Aug. 1.

"The bottom line - this was a 36-month contract, and it ends at the end of July," City Manager Scott Albert said. "We have reached out to the county (to see if Coryell County wanted to take over the contract) but there was no response.

"It would cost the city about $11,000 to continue the service, which has cost the city $26,234 since you started the program."

Gary Chumley noted the facility is still being used by county residents outside Gatesville.

"The only pushback we'll get is from the people in the county using it," he said. "I'll tell them to contact their county commissioner."
