American Legion Post 42 and Lone Scouts Troop honor veterans at The Meadows

Posted

In February, American Legion Post 42 was joined by the Lone Scouts Troop #272, of Gatesville, in the process of retiring U.S. flags that were tattered and faded. The stars from the flags were removed and made into pins, which were then presented to veterans residing at The Meadows at Coryell Health RehabLiving in Gatesville.

The Stars for our Troops program, which began in 2010, is a group of volunteers that are patriotic. They collect old, tattered, and worn-out American Flags and turn them into a prized possession for veterans. Volunteers cut each embroidered star from the flag, dispose of the stripes properly, and place each star into a tiny plastic bag with a card.

American Legion member, Joseph Considine, said that approximately eleven veterans were living at The Meadows, and that each one would be receiving a star in honor of their service to the country.

In addition to the stars, each veteran was presented with a “goody bag.”  The Lone Scouts Troop also presented the veterans with certificates of appreciation for their “tireless efforts in support of the United States Armed Forces.”
