District 15-A-Division I play started last week and two of the three Coryell County football teams find themselves in must-win situations.
Jonesboro (2-6, 0-1 in 15-A-DI) hosted Evant (5-3, 0-1 in 15-A-DI) Friday night in an effort to stay alive in the district playoff hunt. The top two teams in each Class A/six-man district qualify for the postseason.
On the other end of the spectrum, Oglesby (7-1, 1-0 in 15-A-DI) visited Lometa (3-5, 1-0 in 15-A-DI). The winner of that contest clinched a playoff berth.
In Week 11 action, Oglesby hosts Evant and Jonesboro hosts Lometa. Both games are slated to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.
OGLESBY 75, JONESBORO 56
Holdyn Goff accounted for nearly 500 yards and nine touchdowns of total offense in the Tigers’ 75-56 win against the Eagles Oct. 23 in Oglesby. Goff ran 22 times for 307 yards and six touchdowns, while completing 7-of-12 passes for 177 yards and three scores.
Tucker Melton had 111 yards and three touchdowns on all three of his receptions. Caiden Brinkley had a four-yard touchdown run on his only carry of the night.
Mason Marquez (22 tackles) led the Oglesby defense. Goff (15 tackles) and Chayson Melton (12 tackles, 2 tackles for losses) also contributed.
For Jonesboro, Will Featherston (15 carries, 151 yards, 2 TDs), Colton Robertson (13 carries, 150 yards, TD) and Cutter Gribble (15 carries, 102 yards, 4 TDs) led the way offensively – each eclipsing the 100-yard rushing mark. Camdyn Christel (9 tackles, 4 TFLs) led the Eagles on defense.
LOMETA 52, EVANT 0
The Elks were shut out by the Hornets, 52-0, Oct. 22 in Evant. The game ended at halftime because of the 45-point mercy rule.
Evant suffered four turnovers – three fumbles and one interception – and turned the ball over on downs four times. The Elks earned five first downs and only crossed midfield three times.
Lometa, on the other hand, began its first five drives inside Evant territory. All of those drives ended in touchdowns.
The Hornets also returned a pair of Elks fumbles for touchdowns. The only drive Lometa started inside its own territory was the final one of the game with 20 seconds remaining before halftime in which the Hornets took a knee to run out the clock.
Kase Keller (6 catches, 91 yards), Travis McCabe (76 yards passing) and Texan White (40 yards rushing; 15 yards passing) led Evant offensively. Anthony Edwards (5 tackles) led defensively.
Elijah Lovius had a season-low 5 yards rushing but still managed to break the 1,000-yard mark on the season. He has 1,002 rushing yards.
