Fall sports update
As has been the standard for more than a dozen years, GHS varsity teams will be making the trek to the regional meet early next week.
The UIL 4A-Region III meet will be held Monday morning at Kate Barr-Ross Park in Huntsville. Some 24 teams will be competing in each division – at stake are state-meet berths for the Top 4 teams and Top 10 individuals (not on qualifying teams).
Making up the Black & Gold contingent will be the following athletes: Girls – senior Riley Higginbotham, juniors Aubri Gilson, Elliot Shoaf (alt.) and Emily Webb, sophomores Mia Eufracio, Hillary Lawrence (alt.) and Jayde Muegge, and freshmen Lydia Crosby and Mary Mitchell; boys – senior Charles McLeod, juniors Donnovan Herrera, Nick Quintero and Colin Rainer, and freshman Bryson Stevens.
As I mentioned in this space last week, this is old hat for the GHS distance runners. The boys have qualified in 14 of the last 16 seasons, while the girls have been to the regional meet the last 12 years in a row, including a fourth-place finish and state-berth a year ago.
play after a loss to 4A-D2 No. 1 La Vega.
After this week, the Hornets will have just two regular season games remaining: next week at Salado, then versus Robinson in the home finale on Nov. 6. GHS suffered a few injuries in the league opener against Connally, and hopefully most of those that were out against LVHS were ready to go this week.
Golf:
Varsity Girls shot 464 and finished 8th at the Lake Belton Invitational on Monday. The GHS boys will make their fall debut next Wednesday at the Temple tournament.
Volleyball:
The playoff-bound GHS squad was winding up its final two games of the regular season this week.
The Hornets took out the broom with a 3-0 sweep of La Vega on Friday of last week, giving the team its 26th win of the season and improving to 5-3 in district play. The dub also clinched the program’s 24th-straight playoff berth.
GHS now heads to the 4A-D2 bracket and will play Giddings, a qualifier from District 23-4A, on Thursday of next week in the bi-district round.
Notes and dotes
…Really appreciate all of the different teams and groups that helped make last week’s The Big Sting another huge success. That event honors and recognizes persons that have and/or are battling cancer, with every single dollar helping folks in our community. To this date, more than $700,000 had been raised through The Big Sting events over the last 12 years.
…It was good to see former Hornet athlete Jeff Speer again last week. A former GHS football and baseball standout, Jeff is coaching at La Vega after a few years on staff at West Orange – Stark.
