After 33 years, long-time educator Gerald Poe decided to retire and submitted his letter of resignation as assistant principal at the Gatesville Intermediate School.
About 600 students from the Gatesville Intermediate School celebrated the dedication ceremony held at the new school.
Karen Lyle was selected as “Employee of the Month” for September at the Hilltop Unit. She had spent three of her seven years with the TDCJ at the Hilltop Unit.
The Gatesville City League girls’ basketball season began with about 70 local girls signing up to play and the seven teams to compete for trophies.
Dick Gellasch, complex drive coordinator at the Coryell Activities Complex, encouraged the public to buy tickets for prizes during the complex fundraising drive.
1986 (Forty years ago)
The Gatesville Police Department recovered approximately $4,000 in hand tools and power tools following a vehicle and residence burglary.
Dr. Ralph C. Bailey of Gatesville was named to head the “Pioneer Doctor” exhibit at the Coryell Memorial Museum. Dr. Bailey was collecting material to show in the exhibit.
Melanie Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Jones of Gatesville attended an accountant convention held in New York City.
Members of the White Mound Baptist Church hosted the Coryell Baptist Association meeting. The program speaker was Henry Adrion.
Dr. A. Brooks Chapman, son of Judge and Mrs. Alton Chapman of Gatesville, received special recognition at the annual meeting of the American College of Radiology in Maryland.
1976 (Fifty years ago)
A bale of Coastal hay raised by Maurice Young of Jonesboro topped the 45 entries at Coryell County’s first hay show.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hartis announced the opening of Don’s Grocery and Market, which was located on State School Road, in the building formerly known as Swift’s Grocery.
Larry Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Moore of Gatesville, was among the 206 prospective physicians in the freshman medical class at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Latham, Jr. were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary. An open house was held at their home in Turnersville and was hosted by their children.
Mr. and Mrs. David Jund of Gatesville announced the arrival of a baby girl, Jennifer Claire, born at Coryell Memorial Hospital.
1966 (Sixty years ago)
Bob Melbern, a Gatesville farmer and rancher, was re-elected to a three-year term on the Coryell County ASC committee. He was serving his 15th consecutive year.
Mrs. Claude Collins was a $53 winner at Gatesville’s Appreciation Day drawing. More than a dozen Gatesville retail firms distributed Appreciation Day coupons.
John Baize was named the district FFA president and was set to serve at the Cen-Tex district for the coming year.
Sue Byrom was selected as one of the six Heart O’ Texas “Smile Queens” for 1966. She was listed as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Byrom.
Joe Dan Worthington was named as the new instructional media coordination on County School Supt. W.H. Donaldson’s staff.
