TWENTY YEARS AGO (2003)

   — John E. Roberts had been chosen to head the Gatesville High School band program. Roberts was replacing Tom English, who had been the band director at GHS for six years.

   — More than 500 people attended the centennial anniversary at Live Oak Baptist Church. Some travelled from as far away as Alaska, California, and Florida.

   — Navy Petty Officer Mark Davis presented a certificate to Coryell County officials for their support during his three years as a recruiter in the Gatesville Area.

     — JoAnn Sugg was named the Teacher of the Year by the Gatesville Walmart store. Sugg was a family and consumer science teacher at Gatesville High School.

—  The Friends of the Gatesville Public Library had received a $500 grant from the Farms Insurance Group’s Community Sponsorship Fund.

THIRTY YEARS AGO (1993)

   — Judge John Hull and Mayor Wyliss Ament signed joint proclamations declaring Saturday, May 22, Dawson Cooper Day in Gatesville and Coryell County.

   — Regina Tanksley of Gatesville was one of eight new members selected for the nationally recognized McLennan Community College Dance Company.

   — Jason Pratt, a senior at Jonesboro High School, enlisted in the United States Navy for guaranteed training. He was report to the Recruit Training Center in San Diego following his graduation.

   — Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Welch of Oglesby were being honored on the event of their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married on May 25, 1943, at the First United Methodist parsonage in McGregor.

   — Jennifer Beil, Terry Henson, Dewayne Smith, and Buck Stovall were Gatesville athletes who had qualified for the Summer Games of Texas Special Olympics.

FORTY YEARS AGO (1983)

   — Morris Lambert, age 47, was named the new principal at Gatesville Junior High School. Lambert was succeeding Glenn Whittenberg who was retiring after 18 years as principal.

   — Graduating with top honors from Evant High School was Michael Jones, the valedictorian of the Class of 1983 with a four-year grade-point average of 93.5.

   — Jim Buth of Gatesville had been appointed representative for L.M. Equities Inc., a subsidiary of Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company.

   — Dale Mohler, described as “a man with a lean frame and a smooth swing,” shot the golf of his life to claim the 1983 club championship at the Gatesville Country Club.            

—      Dana Walker and Lisa Davis, Gatesville High School seniors, were honored with a cookout at Faunt Le Roy Park. Parents of the honorees were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Luke Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Kafer.

FIFTY YEARS AGO (1973)

   — Marvin Stevens of Mound, instructor in general technology at the James Connally campus of Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, was among the recipients of five years awards made to faculty.

   — Mike Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Miller of Gatesville, graduated from Southwest Texas State University at San Marcos where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration.

   — Kathy Lynn Kilpatrick of Jonesboro was named the Coryell County pecan queen for 1973. She was chosen from a field of 24 poised teenage charmers.

   — Berrimon E. Taylor was selected as band director of the Gatesville public schools for 1973-74. It was announced by GISD superintendent Charles Zeigler.

   — Keith Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Price, received a Bachelor of Science degree in criminology and corrections from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.
