Six-man teams rolling with early wins

Coryell County six-man football teams have dominated the competition early this season.

Through two games, the three six-man schools have posted a combined 6-0 record.

“We’re not really concerned with being 2-0, but just working on the little things and getting better,’’ Jonesboro coach Eddie Gallegos said heading into the Sept. 10 home game versus Johnson County Sports Association.

On the horizon for the Eagles is a Sept. 17 home date with the Blum Bobcats.

That will mark a renewal of the rivalry with the team the Eagles faced in the state semifinal round of the 2019 six-man Division I playoffs. Blum went on to win the state title that year after outlasting the Eagles, who had beaten Blum in the regular season.

“It’s a game that both towns get excited about,’’ Gallegos said.

The Bobcats, the favorites in District 11-1A, Div. I, have opened the season, 1-1. They beat Aquilla and lost to Waco Live Oak.

Gatesville High, which showed well in its home opener against Llano, stumbled in its Sept. 3 road trip at Glen Rose.

The Hornets aimed to get back on track Friday, Sept. 10 with a road trip to Lorena.

Jonesboro 47, Perrin-Whitt 0: The Jonesboro Eagles rushed for 399 yards and scored seven rushing touchdowns in their 47-0 mercy-rule victory over the Perrin-Whitt Pirates, Sept. 3 in Perrin. The game was called in the third quarter.

Caleb Christel led with nine carries for 76 yards and one touchdown. Ian Shoaf scored three times and finished with seven carries for 57 yards.

Other rushers were: Tyler Wilson with eight carries for 84 yards, one TD; Jacob Cisneros with three carries, 17 yards; Manny Torres, three carries, 0 net yards, one TD; and Jaden Domel, six carries, 65 yards, one TD.

DeMarcus Acoff had one pass reception for 0 net yards from Chrstel.

Defensive leaders for Jonesboro were Nat Hilliker with 11 tackles; Christel with nine tackles; Domel with seven tackles; Cisneros with one tackle; Zach Chapman with seven tackles; Shoaf with 10  tackles; Garrett Young with two tackles; and DeMarcus Acoff with five tackles.

Oglesby 36, Morgan 31: Oglesby stuck with its ground game while the Morgan Eagles relied on the passing game in their showdown in week two.

Blake Thompson carried the ball on 25 of the team’s 40 attempts and finished with 247 yards rushing with four touchdowns.

Thompson also was big on defense with six tackles and an interception.

Joel Gonzalez had five carries for 23 yards rushing.

Cash Lee and Matthew Castillo had six and five tackles, respectively.

Ayden Anderson added one quarterback sack for the defense.

Oglesby’s scheduled game with Iredell was canceled, but the Tigers worked in a Friday, Sept. 10 date with Centex of Temple, at Temple.

Evant 51, Moran 6: Evant rumbled to a win over Moran in a road game for the Elks. Running back Hunter White helped lead the way for the Elks, who rolled up 119 points going into a Sept. 10 contest against Brookesmith.

Glen Rose 41, Gatesville 10: The Hornets’ momentum was shot down in week two with a big second half from the Glen Rose Tigers.

The Tigers scored 27 second-half points to even both team’s season records at 1-1.

The Hornets took an early lead when Cayden Mata rambled 14 yards with a scooped fumble with 11:07 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets later added a 27-yard field goal by Luis Macias with 7:17 left in the third quarter.

Carson Brizendine had nine catches for 58 yards for Gatesville. Wesley Brown had 21 rushes for 94 yards to lead the ground attack.
